For anyone who's keen on Japanese history (and, especially Samurai Warriors fans), I've got to recommend Eiji Yoshikawa's Taiko. Yoshikawa was a historical fiction writer, and like books like War and Peace and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, there are some real embellishments and fabrications to what really happened in history, but it'll give you a good groundwork and basis for what happened through the era, and the dominant personalities involved. Especially Hideyoshi Toyotomi, since the book is about his story. It's a long read - something like 800 pages or thereabouts, but it's one I've read a couple of times now, because it's beautifully written (and the translation for the version in the image below is brilliant), and it tells a cracking tale. Here's the Amazon Link if you're keen: www.amazon.com/Taiko-Eiji-Yoshikawa/dp/4770026099/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HDGXXAE7DSCVJSG18Z8R
