Paragon, which was the MOBA by Epic Games, is closing down in April. It wasn't around very long at all: gematsu.com/2018/01/paragon-shut-april-26I love how this games industry all piles into a genre once it has proven to be successful, and every developer tries to do their own version of it. Of course, inevitably they come to realise that not everyone has the time to play every example of the genre, and if you're going to ask players to stop playing, say, League of Legends, then you need to somehow be better than League of Legends. Or at least different enough that some people will think that you're better. Smite is a good example of a game that's been different enough to League of Legends to get its own community. On top of that, there are so many multiplayer games now, it's hard for any of them to develop a community sustainably big. I honestly think that developers are better off creating single player games are forgoing multiplayer at this point in time. Creating a game that relies on multiplayer to be profitable is an incredible risk. I never did play Paragon though. Was it any good?

Epic also has Unreal Tournament and Fortnite: Battle Royale (45 million players and growing) which they moved a lot of the Paragon team to:

I'm not suggesting that Epic's in trouble by any means. I just think that what's happened to most developers when they've tried getting into the MOBA space is a good case study on why it's not always the case that you can look at what's popular and assume that you can simply do it too. I think we're rapidly getting to the point where the incumbents are going to be too difficult to dislodge. There are only so many people out there playing games, after all, and developers are getting better and better at ensuring that their games last on into perpetuity with 'content' updates and the like.
