I'm reading through the Ring trilogy of novels, which obviously the films are based on. I've got to admit, I'm amazed at how much different the books are.
I'd struggle to call them "horror" for a start. They're more akin to a mystery thriller. There's the supernatural horror elements, for sure, but they're not very vivid, and tend to be written through quickly. Mostly the books are about the detective process and how it impacts on the characters.
It's also very tonally different. It's less about a ghost monster climbing out of TVs, and more a parallel to how diseases like smallpox work, and affect human society.
It's quite fascinating, really. I hugely recommend these books to people who like smart writing, and don't be put off by them if you're not a huge fan of horror!
